Genuine Subaru & VW Transmissions

There are many types of transmissions for sale for Subaru and Volkswagen models these days. Options may range widely, from continuously variable (CVT) to dual-clutch (DCT) and everything in between, but two common kinds still persist: manual and automatic.

If you like "driving stick" for the practical experience and the hands-on feel it gives, you probably prefer a manual. If you like shifting without a clutch, though, you probably prefer an auto. Your vehicle can have either kind, and each works a little differently from the other.

A manual gearbox, for example, lets you select gear ratios. How it works is simple. You press a clutch, an input shaft separates, and you shift into gear. Then, a linkage connects a locking collar to an output shaft, and you release the clutch. The input shaft re-engages, the output shaft turns, and the drive continues. This process enables shifting without your engine going above its rpm range (its "redline").

An auto gearbox, however, works a bit more simply. There's no clutch. It also adds a fluid coupling converter (i.e., a torque converter) to the gearset. This component connects your engine and transmission, and it changes gears using fluid pressure.

Sooner or later, though, any transmission can go out. Luckily, there are signs to look for to tell you that's happening. They vary slightly according to transmission type.

For a manual transmission, they include:

  • A clutch that feels feel slippery or otherwise unusual
  • High engine rev
  • A burning smell following clutch release
  • Grinding or other noises during shifting
  • The feel of delay when changing gears
  • The inability to find the right gear

For an automatic transmission, they include:

  • Humming, whining, or clunking sounds
  • Gear slippage
  • Fluid leaks

In either case, service your transmission immediately. Before ordering a new one (or parts for one), however, you should make sure it's genuine. You're in luck: our auto parts store has compatibility with your VW or Subaru covered.
