Genuine Subaru & VW Air Filters
Air Filters: Buying Guide and FAQs
How Many and What Kinds are There?
Two -- an engine air filter and a cabin air filter.
What Do They Do?
Capture airborne contaminants. That means everything from dirt and sand to mold spores, pollen, road debris, and even insects. The engine filter keeps them from getting into the rest of the motor via the air intake. The cabin filter keeps them from getting into the ducts and depositing on the vents of the heating and air conditioning systems.
What are They Made of?
One of four materials: synthetic paper, foam, cotton, or metal, pleated for optimal trapping and either flat, circular, or cylindrical by design. Some, you can wash and reuse.
What are the Signs They're Going Bad?
Everything from obstructed airflow/clogs, worn and/or damaged media, and worsening gas mileage to black smoke coming from the exhaust. These may accompany a lit Check Engine light and/or other warning lights on the dashboard, and you may also experience engine power loss, misfires, and other unusual engine noises, plus trouble speeding up. There may even be whistling and/or other abnormal sounds coming from the cabin's vents, along with dirty or stale smells.
When Should They be Replaced?
Once a year. That's every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, and no more than every 30,000 miles. Otherwise, take care of the job when you see the symptoms mentioned above. For more info and further instructions, review your owner's manual's maintenance schedule. Before ordering new air filters, make sure they're genuine.
Why Buy Genuine OEM Air Filters?
Unlike what's on the aftermarket, they're guaranteed compatible with the car or SUV you drive.
